They make money by donations, at least Wikipedia does, there aren’t any (none that I recall) ads. Other sites might have paid ads or they might get sponsorships from like minded companies that feel their work warrants the financial support. I image that there is enough support out there from non-profit organizations, this includes grants as well, that keep “free” information alive. But you should never trust 100% of what you read!
Note: these samples are ones I use, there are millions to choose from and many fall into multiple categories.
